Data Engineer Things Newsletter #17
Volunteer opportunities, DEML Summit recordings, and what's coming in 2025.
Hello there! 👋🏼
Time flies by and we are near the end of 2024! My family started a holiday tradition several years ago: writing down and sharing a list of things we are grateful for. Here are a few things on my gratitude list. I’m grateful for the DET community members who generously offer their time and knowledge to help others grow. I’m also thankful for the genuine constructive feedback I received from my colleagues and for being able to grow from that feedback. Lastly, I’m grateful that I can be myself at work and with the community - because I’m at my best when I don’t need to pretend, when I can be curious all the way, and when I can say no.
While a growth mindset requires us to be aware of where we lack, it’s just as important to recognize what we have, such as strengths, achievements, and connections. I encourage you to create your own list and celebrate it!
🎉 A New Chapter for DET Medium Publication
Introducing the new Editor-in-Chief for our publication on Medium: Yaakov Bressler!
With over 7 years of experience in data engineering, Yaakov is currently a Lead Data Engineer at Capital One. Not only is he an active writer himself, but he also has been an editor for DET since the beginning of our publication. In the last year of working with Yaakov, I've witnessed firsthand how responsible, reflective, and selfless he is, so I have confidence in the positive impact he will bring to the publication.

🪴 2025 Looking Ahead
We are always exploring new ideas to make the community better. I’d like to share a few things coming up in early 2025:
I will be speaking at the Data Day Texas on Jan 25. If you plan to attend as well, drop me a note on Slack.
We are now part of O'Reilly’s community partner program - which means our members will get access to free O'Reilly learning resources, e.g., free books!
“My involvement in the DET community helped me land the new job” - I’ve heard this from several folks! I’m brainstorming a new program for community members to participate in to build their professional brands.
Any suggestions from you?
Have a great week and see you next time (probably in 2025)! ❄️
Cheers,
Xinran Waibel
